Difference between Civil Engineer and Architect

We decide to help the students to choose a career in the field of civil engineering and architecture, we made a list of difference between these two.

The construction industry is ruled by two professions i.e., Architects and Civil Engineers. Both are involved in designing and planning the structure. Civil engineer works on the whole project, an architect is focused on one structure.

Architects designing a buildings and other structures by their creative, artistic and visionary imagination. The main concern for architects is function, social, environmental, technical and aesthetics of the structure, while civil engineering is the oldest form of engineering have evidence from 4000 BC . It deals with the  design, construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment, including roads, rails, bridges, canals and dams. The main concern for engineers is scientific, practical, and systematic approach to structural design to create a safe structure.

Generally architect who create plans and engineer who turns this into reality. Architects are involved in the development of construction projects such as residential, commercial and public buildings where as the scope of civil engineering is very broad which also involves public projects such as Bridges, Railway track, Airports, Dams, Harbors etc. The duration of the undergraduate degree in architecture is 5 years and 4 years for civil engineering.

Some of the sub-disciplines of civil engineering are

  • Construction engineering and Project management
  • Earthquake engineering
  • Environmental engineering
  • Geotechnical engineering
  • Geomatics engineering
  • Materials science and Construction materials engineering
  • Ocean, offshore and coastal engineering
  • Structural engineering
  • Surveying
  • Transportation engineering
